Questions, answered.

The things writers ask before they start, and a few they ask after. If yours isn't here, write to hello@writewithquilt.com. A person reads every one.

Getting started

What is Quilt?

A novel-writing app that walks you from one sentence to a finished first draft, using the ten steps of the Snowflake Method. Each step asks you one question; Thimble, the editor built into Quilt, writes the step from your answer and everything you've decided before. You keep what you like, comment on what you don't, and move on.

What does it cost?

Nothing while Quilt is in early access. Thimble runs on Quilt's own account with a generous daily allowance for each writer. If you'd rather use your own Anthropic API key, add it in Settings and Thimble talks to Anthropic directly from your device instead.

Do I need to know the Snowflake Method?

No. Quilt explains each step as you reach it and shows you what it's for. If you want the whole picture first, read the method, the Quilt way.

Can I see what it looks like with a real book in it?

Yes. On the first screen, choose open a sample novel. The Keeper of Halloran Light has every step filled in, with comments, reactions and notes in the margins, so you can click around before you write a word of your own.

I already have a draft. Can I still use Quilt?

You can start at the first step with the book you already know, and your answers will be quick. Bringing in an existing manuscript as a draft isn't built yet; it's on the list.

Thimble

Who is Thimble, and who is Pip?

Thimble is the AI editor in Quilt, and Pip, the little patch with eyes, is its face. Pip sits in the corner of every page; press / to ask it anything about your book. It answers like a friend with a pencil: short, specific, and pointing to the step it's talking about.

Which AI model does it use?

Anthropic's Claude. Opus is the default, and you can pick Sonnet or Haiku in Settings, along with how hard Thimble thinks.

What are hats?

When you comment on a line, you can choose the hat Thimble wears for it. Editor looks at story, stakes and character. Line looks at rhythm, word choice and voice. Proof fixes grammar and typos only.

Will it change my words without asking?

Never. Every change Thimble suggests shows up in your words, crossed out and highlighted, until you take it or keep yours. Everything waiting for you is in one list, To review.

Does Thimble learn how I write?

A little, and in the open. What Thimble has learned is a short list on your novel's page: things like "no adverbs in dialogue tags". You can read it, change it, or delete any line, and it goes into every draft.

Can it see pictures?

Yes. Add an image to a scene or a character (a place, a face, a mood) and Thimble reads it when it writes.

Your words

Who owns what I write?

You do, all of it, including what Thimble drafts for you. Quilt claims nothing.

Is my book used to train AI?

No. Quilt doesn't train anything, and Anthropic's terms for its API say it doesn't train its models on what's sent through it. More in privacy, in plain words.

Where is my book kept?

On your device first, saved as you type. If you sign in, a copy syncs to Quilt's server so your other devices can have it. Nobody at Quilt reads your books.

What if two devices change the same book?

You keep both. The device you're on keeps its copy, and the other one arrives beside it as "(from another device)", so no words are lost.

Can I go back to an earlier draft?

Yes. Every rewrite of every step is kept as a version, and you can open any of them.

Apps and sync

Where can I use Quilt?

In any modern browser at quiltwriter.com, and in the Mac app. iPhone and iPad apps are on the way.

How do I sign in?

With your email. Quilt sends you a six-digit code; there's no password to remember.

Does it work offline?

Writing and reading do, because your book lives on your device. Thimble needs a connection, and sync catches up when you're back online.

Can I change how it looks?

Pick from eight looks, each with a light and a dark print: Quilt, Notebook, Typewriter, Print, Rain, Neon Sign, Sticker and Lilac. Each one can follow your device's light and dark, too. Try them on this site.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

For nearly everything. ⌘K goes anywhere, / asks Thimble, ⌘↵ writes the step, ⌘[ and ⌘] move between steps, and ? shows the rest.

Getting it out

How do I get my book out of Quilt?

From the manuscript: save it for Word in standard manuscript format, or print it as a book (or save that as a PDF). You can also export the plan and the draft as Markdown, and back up a whole novel to a file you can open again later.

Can Quilt help me revise the whole draft?

Ask Thimble for an editor's letter. It reads the whole draft with your plan and notes and writes back: what's working, the big things, notes scene by scene, and a plan for the next draft.
